The first known written mention about the city of Chernigov can be found in "The Tale of Bygone Years" and is dated 907 year. According to the most common version of the city`s name origin Chernigov got its name from the name of Slavic Tribe chief - Prince Cherniy.
The economy of the modern Chernihiv includes such industries as machine building, light industry, chemical, wood processing. The largest enterprises are: PJSC "Chernihivskyi Avtobusnyi Zavod", JSC "Chernihivskyi Zavod Avtopribiriv", JSC "Chernihivske Khimvolokno". There are 5 higher educational institutions operate in Chernigov, as well as numerous educational institutions of I-II levels of accreditation.
